 Attacks Continue Minimize

They are coming to Pennsylvania - Wednesday, March 23, 2011
Wisconsin….It’s all about politics

By Wayne Walton, PSEA-R
Past Local president and Chief Negotiator

The ability of workers to unionize is a cherished RIGHT that has been fought for every day during the past century. The stripping of such a basic right from workers by the Wisconsin legislature is an attack, an attack on all the working peoples of the world. The Wisconsin fiasco is not about the money issues the talking heads spew on the news channels. The school killers profess to the American taxpayer that it’s about teachers paying into their pensions and paying for part of their healthcare. The Wisconsin teachers long ago agreed to do just that. The true reality of the Wisconsin legislative action is much different.

CALL YOUR SENATOR NOW!!! - Monday, February 15, 2010
KEEP THE PROMISE YOUR FATHERS MADE 40 YEARS AGO

Protect Your Pension - Contact Your State Senator
Tell state senators to protect defined benefit pensions
We have spent the last two years been preparing for this moment. Pension reform legislation is moving through Pennsylvania's General Assembly. We must make sure it follows a good direction.

PSEA is supporting a bill that passed the House on June 16 (HB 2497) because it keeps the promise of a defined benefit pension plan and provides a balanced and reasonable solution to the pension crisis. PSEA worked closely with House leaders to ensure that the legislation preserves the defined benefit pension system and retirement security for current and future school employees.

If the Senate does not pass this bill, it will simply allow more than 10 years of bad policies to continue. They will purposely underfund the system for another year – such bad decisiosn are what caused the underfunding problems in the first place.

PSEA members must also stand united and fight against any changes from the Senate, such as a defined contribution plan, that would establish an inferior retirement system.

House Bill 2497 creates a fiscally responsible payment plan for PSERS to manage pension "spike." It also makes other reasonable changes for future employees, but keeps them in the same defined benefit plan as current employees

Contact your state Senator TODAY and urge him or her to pass HB 2497.

 WE ARE UNDER ATTACK Minimize

ATTACK - Tuesday, December 15, 2009
Your retirement pension is under attack!! Kindly read your PSEA Voice magazine December 2009 for full coverage.

In a nutshell.....Our PSERS system and your pension benefits are under attack. Attack from the General assembly and these folks are expected to take up a variety of proposals containing harmful changes to our pension system. Make no mistake about it, they are coming after our retirement system.

You MUST be aware of this threat and be ready to act on a moment's notice. PSEA and your MONTCO RETIRED organizations are monitoring the situation daily and will need you to do battle with these shortsighted folks via letters, calls and emails on short notice.

what can you do NOW???
1) Sign up for PSEA"S Pension Alert Text Messages to be delivered to your cell phone so you can receive all breaking news take necessary action quickly. (NOTE: You will only receive texts about the pension issue).
TEXT 717-514-2880 and use YOUR MEMBER ID NUMBER as the body of the text. (Your ID number is on your ID card OR sign up for the text message at PSEA.org/pension

2) Make sure PSEA has your personal e-mail address on file. Update your email address at www.PSEA.org/myprofile

3)Make sure Montco Retired has your phone/cell and email address for any emergency.

4) Write or email your state legislators now and in the future.

5) Money, of course, always wags the dog. Donate $10-20 to PACE at PSEA.org/pace

RETIREMENT TALKING POINTS - Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Talking Points:
a) Teachers and school employees have faithfully been making regular and constant contributions to PSERS their entire working lives. State and local districts have NOT been paying their fair share thus causing the problem.
b) Some proposals would actually harm, not help, the situation by contributing less money to the system.
c) Taking benefits away from future employees is not fair to them and will weaken the system by withholding even more monies.
d) any change to a "defined contribution plan" will do nothing to help the current situation and in fact will make it worse.
e) In short, the problem with the system lies with those sitting in Harrisburg who defaulted on their promise to fund their fair share. The general assembly caused the problem and it is up to them to solve it.

KEEP THE PROMISE!!

MORE TAXES COMING OUR WAY - Tuesday, December 15, 2009
Tell Congress: No Excise Tax On Health Insurance Plans!

The United States Senate is currently debating the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590) – a health insurance reform bill that would pay for needed reforms by imposing a 40 percent excise tax on high-cost insurance plans.
Although the tax would be paid by insurance companies and plan administrators (employers), not by employees, the ultimate result would be a dramatic reduction in benefits as the excise taxes payable would be so high that insurance companies and employers would do everything in their power to avoid paying it.
The excise tax is bad policy. It would have a devastating impact on exactly the type of good, comprehensive health care plans reform should be promoting. At the same time, despite President Obama’s promise that those with employer-sponsored health insurance could keep what they have, the excise tax would lead to large-scale upheaval in many workers’ current coverage.
The health care bill passed by the House of Representatives last month contains no excise tax.
Contact your Senators Today! Tell the Senate to reject any excise tax on high-cost plans in health insurance reform legislation.

Issue #1-When the stimulus money runs out next year, there will be a $700 million hole in Pennsylvania’s education budget. The jobs bill could bring additional resources to PA to save members job. Follow the link and act now!

Issue #2-The U.S. Senate is considering taxing employee health care benefits to fund health care reform. This will affect PSEA members and PSEA staff. Please tell Specter and Casey not to fund health care reform on the backs of middle class America. Many of us have traded wage increases to maintain our health care coverage.
